The tradition of service began when Richard Mortman established himself as an oil burner service mechanic in 1962. Immersing himself in the trade, Richard began his first boiler/burner company, Progressive Combustion, in 1968. Quickly becoming the Tri-State area’s choice for boiler installation, service and repair, Richard left Progressive to open R.D. Mortman & Co. (RDM) in 1980, inviting his brother Gary to join the firm and run the service department.

Throughout the 1980s and 90s, R.D. Mortman & Co. performed successful boiler plant replacements for many high-profile institutional clients, including the NYC Housing Authority and the New York City School Construction Authority. When deregulation set in, Keyspan Energy Management (formerly Brooklyn Union Gas) chose RDM as their first acquisition. RDM’s exceptional reputation made it an obvious choice for Keyspan, who purchased the firm in 1997. Richard remained to run the RDM division for four years.

Upon completion of their non-compete agreement and their contract with Keyspan, Richard, Gary and Richard’s two sons (Greg and Jeff) formed National Mechanical Services, Inc.  The new company opened at the site where RDM had begun nearly two decades before.

Today, National Mechanical, Inc. honors its longstanding family legacy by ensuring that a Mortman principal oversees every service-related aspect of the company, and is personally on site for every system installation. The current team serves many private/public and Institutional clients, and is a first-choice mechanical contractor for the Tri-State real estate community. National Mechanical also offers practical, affordable solutions for the heating and hot water needs of multi-family residential and commercial clients.

Over time, National Mechanical Services, Inc. has grown to offer the largest service department and fastest response times in the NYC boiler industry. Other unique company offerings include:

  • Boiler/Burner Installations with the finest attention to details
  • Immaculate, top-of-the-line mobile boilers for emergency use
